B.B.king is an absolute master of phrasing. In his soloing he is trying tell you a story, and in order to successfully tell a story, you need to know when to say something, and when not to.
This is what we are trying to achieve in this short solo! Start with a short phrase, or lick, then let it breath. Let that sound register and wash over you, before saying something new.
It’s also often called ‘call and response’ and can massively improve your soloing.
We also tackle the vibrato and bending techniques that make the phrases so vocal like.
Enjoy!

This is where we get into the GOOD stuff, the real bluesy stuff!

I’ve got a blues solo for you to learn, complete with an intro and a turnaround!. This should help you get an idea of what a blues riff should or can sound like. For this one, we’ll be playing in the Key of A, mainly working off of a minor pentatonic scale.

When you’re learning this riff, I’d recommend playing it as is before trying to add in any flourishes, inflections, or vibrato. Once you can play it straight the way through as a tempo you’re comfortable with (no stops!), then you start experimenting with different sounds and effects. In fact, you're encouraged to!

Speaking of tempo, full speed for this is 94 beats per minute, but you can start somewhere around 60 and work your way up from there.

Once you’re comfortable with all of the above, practice it with a jam buddy! One of you can play the solo while the other plays the 12-bar blues shuffle (coming to you later in the lesson). Then, switch! It’s not nice to hog the spotlight!
